As a legal analyst at CNN, Sunny was one of the first reporters to bring national attention to the tragic shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. But the high-profile case was not the first time – nor would it be the last – the now-51-year-old would fight for justice. In fact, it’s been her life’s mission.
Born to a Puerto Rican mother and an African American father, Sunny has often faced racism and bigotry. That intolerance, coupled with early brushes with violence in her South Bronx neighborhood, spurred her to become a lawyer. After a successful run as a federal prosecutor, she transitioned over to TV, eventually landing a permanent chair at The View. Sunny chronicles her career path, struggle with infertility (she suffered five miscarriages before carrying her firstborn son to term), and journey to reconcile her backgrounds in her new memoir, I Am These Truths.
Regarding her ongoing fight for justice, Sunny is more optimistic than ever. “This feels different,” she says of the recent reckoning. “It’s not just some moment.” Hear, hear!
